Retouching Portraits and People

Course Description

Working in Adobe Photoshop, this class will cover basic and advanced retouching techniques making it the ideal class for art directors, graphic designers and photographers – those creative professionals who need to be familiar with portrait enhancing techniques.  You’ll receive a thorough introduction to all the tips and tricks including an introduction to plug-in filters for glamour effects.  We will also explore the philosophy of “what to retouch” and “what to leave alone” while learning how to maintain the integrity of the photograph. We’ll provide images for you to work on in class, or you’re welcome to bring your own photos to retouch. And if any issues come up after the class is concluded, support is a mouse click away.

Session One:

Introduction from the instructor. Class overview. Post class student support program explanation and access information.

The goal of retouching: Determining what approach to take in enhancement or retouching

Retouching Common Problems

• Blemishes & Acne
• Softening wrinkles
• Dark under-eye circles
• Catch Lights
• Hot spots on skin
• Stray Hair and other hair problems

Session Two:

Advanced Retouching Techniques

• Color correction of skin tones
• Eye Opening
• Glass Glare
• Retouching and whitening teeth
• Neck and Jowl slimming
• Clothes issues
• Backgrounds – changing the color and other enhancements
• Slimming the Subject

An introduction to plug-ins for glamour or fun effects

Course Prerequisites

This class assumes you have working knowledge of computers and operating systems. It is assumed you know how to use your mouse, the standard menu and commands and how to open and save files. If you are bringing your own computer, make sure you have the version software that is being taught in the class. In the event that you are not knowledgeable in the use of computers, the instructor will not be able to take time away from the other students to teach you. One-on-one tutoring is available for a fee.

Beyond general computer knowledge, you MUST have a basic working knowledge of Photoshop with Photoshop CS3 or later installed if you are providing your own computer.  A Wacom tablet (providing touch sensitivity) is a nice compliment to your computer when retouching, but not required.  Images will be provided, however we do encourage students to bring some images to work on. Be prepared to share them with the instructor.
